8:53 -- agree with most of what you said, but strongly disagree with your premise that NGSL folks are necessarily the "extroverts" who will pull in business. Drinking and softball do not necessarily translate into developing client relationships, and to think otherwise is extremely simplistic ("i drink a lot, therefore i get along with people and will have lots of clients"). This is what the C-avg "popular" students in high school kept telling themselves -- look them up and see how that's working out for them!

I consider myself to be pretty extroverted -- was VP of my fraternity in college, played basketball my whole life, lots of extracurriculars, etc. But i wouldn't join ngsl if they begged me (they never asked, so i guess the feeling is mutual).

The ngsl folks might be equivalent to the "class clowns" in high school, but the future rainmakers are those who combine polished social skills with strong legal ability and business acumen. NGSL membership suggests NONE of these things. Neither the firm partnership committee nor the GC of IBM is not going to be impressed by the beer-drinking dolt who can hit a mean softball.

I'm a neutral party here, but I have some advice for everyone on this thread: learn how to get along. You're going to go out into the world and work with all kinds of clients and other attorneys, both at your firm and other firms as co-counsel or opposing counsel.

The extroverts will be the ones who bring in the lion's share of the client work. The introverts will do the lion's share of that work. That's the way it works at most of the firms where you all are going to practice. It's a symbiotic relationship.

No doubt it's not binary - some introverts will pull in client work and some extroverts will do that work, but that's not the way the bulk of this goes down. Some small % of the whole will have the skills/temperament to pull in work and also the skills/temperament to do that work - but you won't have the time to do both. Hence, you're back to that symbiotic relationship.

So if you're an "NGSL-hater" as described on this board, you're going to love those NGSL-types who go out and schmooze and pull in work, so that you don't have to do it. And if you're an NGSL-type and are stoking the fires of this discussion, you're going to love the posters who are doing the hating, because they'll do the work that you pull in (allowing you to get repeat business and have a firm that does the quality of work that you can sell).

One of the skills you will need most in your career is the ability to work well with - and motivate - all different types of personalities. Associating with only people who work and think just like you do isn't going to get it done for the vast majority of you. So instead of throwing barbs at each other, why not just acknowledge that you have different priorities and leave it alone. No one has to be nasty about it, and frankly, it's disheartening to read this venomous back-and-forth. It reflects poorly on all of us, regardless of where you stand on the issue of NGSL.

still confused: what exactly is the criteria for being selected for ngsl? i only know a few of the members, but looks/social skills/athletic ability CANNOT be the criteria. so what is? just curious.

we all know what the criteria for law review is -- an exclusive club that is INFINITELY more valuable than ngsl. so why is ngsl so secretive?

while we're on the subject, what's the criteria for this Raven (or Robin, or some bird -- don't remember which) Society nonsense i hear so much about? Sorry, i was a yale ug, and our "secret" societies are a bit more interesting than the Blue Jay Society or whatever it's called here.

Here is my take on NGSL:

- 40% of people like NGSL because the organize a softball league that is fun, and couldn't care about the social organization.
- 40% of people couldn't care less because they no longer play softball.
- 10% of people are in NGSL and love their frat.
- 10% care about (read: hate) NGSL even though it has no effect on their lives.

Overgeneralize much? What sets UVA apart from other top law schools it that people actually have fun and enjoy it here. Based on attendance at bar review, Feb Club, Dandelion, etc., I'd say "most of us" feel more like that way.

And if you think that atmosphere isn't a factor in people -- smart, capable, normal people that enhance both our entering GPA/LSAT scores and our reputation as a school after they graduate -- coming here, I would argue you are dead wrong. Certainly was for me.
